One Rotarian……One Vision.
Twenty-seven years ago, Rotarian Dick Keffer had a vision that there must be many middle school aged children in Charlotte that had never been to the ocean. Mr. Keffer, acting on his vision, offered to fund the event and sought the support of his Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Charlotte-South readily agreed and after meeting with the Superintendent of Charlotte Schools, Beach Blast was born.
Each spring for the past 27 years, the Charlotte South Rotary has organized and worked with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to take up to 500 at risk kids, who have never seen the beach. Each child must earn the right to go on this one-day trip by meeting standards set by their teachers. During this 27 year period over 10,000 kids have had the opportunity to go to the beach and play in the ocean.
The Rotary Club of Charlotte-South collaborates with the Myrtle Beach Sunrise Rotary who arrange for the pavilion at the beach and provide a delicious barbeque lunch and lifeguards for the event. All totaled, over 70 Rotarians are involved each year in making this a great event for the kids.
Rotarian Dick Keffer recently passed away, but his vision of Beach Blast is so entrenched in the hearts of the Rotary Club of Charlotte-South and many others that it is likely to continue for many more years.
The Rotary Club Charlotte-South was formed in 1984 and has grown into one of the leading clubs within Rotary District 7680. The club has been home to former District Governor (DG) Bill Belk and is proud that incoming DG Tom Smith and Scott Van Der Linden as DG designee are active members of the Charlotte-South club.
